Since our new studio opened in April we’ve been full speed ahead. Our hands, dye pots, and baskets have been full with work, water, and flowers. Visions become reality become the next piece of art in your living room. It’s hard to find the words to capture the gratitude we feel towards our clients and patrons who connect with our process. Commissions

This summer we completed two commissions spanning the range of our medium.

The first piece is a triptych – Three Songs for Late August – three sewn paintings inspired by Paul Klee’s “magic squares. “

Before we moved studios, we were chatting with our client about a sewn painting inspired by the palette of The Everglades. After a phone call and a few emails, we sent a digital sketch anticipating the composition of the triptych. Because we are working with natural materials, we emphasized that the color palette of the final piece may vary from the digital mock up. Like wine is influenced by its terroir, the colors produced from dye plants show variations related to the growing season. These variations are what we enjoy about our medium, and any clients interested in commissioned work must also appreciate the magic of nature’s influence.

Luckily, all our clients like our work for this very reason. Below, see the digital mock up compared to the final piece.

Another commission we finished was a 90×66″ color field inspired by an early piece titled Heron to a Full Moon. The commission – The Other side of the Sun – was named after the final line of Here&Now, a poem by naturalist and transcendentalist poet A.R. Ammons.

Three Songs and The Other Side are large paintings that we are incredibly proud of. Three Songs demanded meticulous attention to detail and note-taking, both in the dye studio and at the sewing table. The Other Side demanded physicality and patience as nearly a hundred layers of indigo were applied across the 6×8′ canvas.

Our summer saw constant tinkering, fussing, thinking, and staring – and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

It is easy to get to work when it is something you love.

On Loving – and Indulging – the Process

Recently I stumbled across a line from The Diaries of Paul Klee that felt like looking in a mirror. After a life changing visit to Tunisia in 1914, Klee writes of his relationship to color:

Color has taken possession of me; no longer do I have to chase after it, I know that it has hold of me forever… Color and I are one—I am a painter

Such is the pursuit of Thought Forms – a process fueled by a possession of botanical colors and devotion to their realm. Colors are deceptively simple and are in fact vehicles for connecting with ourselves and the world around us. When asked, “What is the work about?” I can’t help but hear Stevie Nicks in my head singing Bella Donna

It’s just a feeling, sort of captures your soul.
